Public event showcases careers in healthcare

Over 100 visitors were inspired to consider careers in health and social care at a successful Healthcare Careers event at Maidstone Hospital.

The event, held on Saturday 18 March, highlighted both clinical and non-clinical careers in the NHS. It was open to those currently at school or college and considering an NHS career, as well as those who don’t currently work in health, who may be looking to return to work after a break or are considering a career change.

There are around 350 NHS careers and people had opportunity to find out more about the wide range of roles in health and social care, including pharmacy, operating theatres, radiotherapy, allied health professional (AHP) roles such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy, nutrition and dietetics and speech and language therapy.

It was a great opportunity to learn about vital support services such as emergency planning, research and innovation, estates and facilities, libraries, human resources and IT/digital.

There were interactive displays led by the Trust’s resuscitation team and medical education fellows, as well as the opportunity to visit the Simulation Suite and see it in action. A lecturer from St. George’s, University of London, also demonstrated how radiotherapy is used to treat patients with cancer.

Visitors could watch demonstrations and use mannequins and real equipment to get hands-on experience of CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and putting a breathing tube through a patient’s mouth into their airway (intubation).

Head of Learning and Development, Haylie Usher, said: “From estate managers, IT professionals and chefs to midwives, nurses and scientists, there’s a fantastic range of options in healthcare and over 350 careers across our NHS.

“It might be an entry-level role or a job that needs specialist qualifications, but if you’re passionate about the health services we all rely on, this event was a chance to find out about the fantastic opportunities open to you.”

The Trust’s Career Development team were on hand throughout the day to provide advice and guidance and the Recruitment team shared information about the latest job vacancies at MTW.
